BCSC Career Opportunities
Working at the BCSC
Since we first opened to serve the Mott Haven community in the fall of 2004, we have built a team of highly committed individuals whose dedication and professionalism contribute to our work and to the evolution of our school. We are eager to recruit dedicated, diverse, dynamic, intelligent individuals to join us!
The Partnership for Innovation in Compensation for Charter Schools (PICCS)
The BCSC is one of ten NYC charter schools participating in the Partnership for Innovation in Compensation for Charter Schools (PICCS). This is a comprehensive program designed to recruit, retain, develop and reward top quality teachers and school leaders at charter schools. Led by the Center for Educational Innovation - Public Education Association (CEI-PEA), PICCS is funded through a five-year federal grant from the Teacher Incentive Fund program, which supports development of performance-based compensation systems to drive increases in student performance.

A Multi-Level Career Path for Teachers
Core to its efforts to recruit and retain great teachers, the BCSC has committed to instituting a multi-level career path for its instructional staff members. At the BCSC, this multi-level career path is designed to promote growth everyday and over time. Our educators function at one of four levels:
- Instructional Leaders: Instructional Leaders' main focus is on instructional improvement. In the 2007-08 school year, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, 4th Grade/ Specialists Director and Inclusion Program Manager operate in this capacity. These individuals are responsible for the performance of all teachers and the evolution of effective instructional practice at the BCSC.
- Teacher Leaders: Teacher Leaders are professional, experienced educators. At the BCSC, they are identified on each grade level and on the specialty teaching team. These individuals are supported to increase their own leadership capacity and contribute to further developing programs at the school.
- Teachers: Teachers are strong and committed educators who are working towards professional status as a grade level team leader. They are at least at a bachelor's level.
- Assistant Teachers: Assistant Teachers are new and have opportunities to observe other teachers and receive feedback about their own practice. They are closely monitored and supported to encourage growth and movement towards Teacher status through a program of both teaching and observing.
Embedding Professional Development in Practice
There are several aspects of professional development at the BCSC, in addition to the leveled support structure described above, that encourage great teaching and rigorous learning at the school.
- Data-Driven Instruction: Routinely reviewing, analyzing and strategizing around student assessment data in teams and as a school offers many opportunities for reflection and active discussion around instructional practice.
- Higher Education Collaborations:
- NYC Math Project, Lehman College: The BCSC has worked with a staff developer from the NYC Math Project at Lehman College since its inception. This support provides guidance in constructivist math instructional strategies in order to encourage the development of critical problem-solving skills and both broaden and deepen the effectiveness of math instruction.
- BCSC Internal Systems:
- Individual professional development support is provided by the instructional leaders of the school through routine observations of classroom instruction, written feedback on weekly lesson plans and modeling.
- Instructional leaders also provide whole-group instruction on topics related to curriculum, instruction and assessment to support the practice of teaching. These sessions take place during the two weeks of staff development in August, on Friday afternoons 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm and on various other dates and times throughout the school year.
- Teachers are also provided with opportunities to seek off-site professional development with the approval of the Executive Director. Frequently, teachers are asked to turnkey teh information gained through these experiences to their BCSC colleagues in order to significantly increase the impact on instructional practice across the school.
