Small class size and an extended day/extended year program
(operating from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., 190 school days per year)
positively contribute to the development of a cohesive and
supportive school.
Instructional Approach
The BCSC provides our K-5 students with the tools necessary for
a lifetime of learning, including a strong foundation of literacy
and mathematical skills and opportunities to think critically,
research, explore, and develop the capability to solve
problems.
The BCSC utilizes a standards-based, workshop model approach to
instruction. In addition to this model, the BCSC retains a
strong focus on experiential, constructivist learning through the
incorporation of content-related field trips and hands-on
experiences built into the curriculum - specially in the areas of
social studies and science.
BCSC Student Profile
Our students originate from the United States, Puerto Rico, the
Dominican Republic, Caribbean islands, Mexico, Honduras, Peru,
Ecuador, the Philippines, and several African countries.
While all of our academic studies are conducted in English to
ensure our students' academic success, our school community
respects and celebrates these home languages and cultures.
During the 2009-2010 academic year:
- Eighty four percent (84%) of our students received free and
reduced lunch, a marker for poverty;
- Eleven percent (11%) of our students received services for
English as a Second Language (ESL);
- Thirteen percent (13%) of our students received services for
Special Education.
